AL: Welcome to College Admissions Real Talk. This is Dr. Aviva Legatt, founder and Elite Admissions Expert at Ivy Insight and author of “Get Real and Get In”. Today, I want to take you a little bit further inside of “Get Real and Get In”. I wrote this book to help students figure out who they are and what they want on the way to college, but not just to get into their dream school. So this book comes from my perspective as an insider in college admissions and in higher education. The book is going to guide you on how to identify and harness your authentic passions to stand out from the crowd and achieve your dreams in college and beyond. The book comes out on August 3, but if you want an advanced copy, the site Goodreads.com is actually putting together a giveaway from my book. Many thanks to my publisher, St Martin’s Press, for getting my book on to the Goodreads contest. So you can go to Goodreads and you can add my book to your want to read list, and you can also add it to different categories. And by doing that, you’ll become able to get the notification about the giveaway. The giveaway itself is happening between now and April 8, 2021. There’s about 300 people who are already in the giveaway as of just the day online, so I’m imagining by the time you hear this, there will be many more. So definitely look to enter that giveaway. The book comes out August 3, but the contest ends April 8 so you’ll be eligible to get an advanced copy of my book, which I hope will help you in your college process sooner rather than later. So “Get Real and Get In” is going to teach you to think outside the box and focus on what admissions officers are really looking for people like you who dare to be your most authentic self. The book is going to form for you an inspirational roadmap to uncover your true passions and leverage them to create applications that truly stand out from the crowd. So if you have trouble figuring out what makes you unique and how you can differentiate yourself, this book is going to help you with that exact problem. I’m also so honored and thrilled to feature interviewees who are very successful now about what life was like for them as they were applying to college and going to college for the first time. I interviewed people like Adam Grant, who’s a New York Times bestselling author, Dorie Clark, who is an author as well as a Harvard Business Review contributor, and Thomas Kail, who’s the Tony- Award winning director of Hamilton: An American Musical. So this book is designed to help you ignite an essential mind shift through some exercises. I have some personal stories from myself, some of which you may know already if you’ve been following this podcast and incredible stories from influential leaders like the ones I just mentioned. This book is going to help you look beyond getting into a good college and focus more actively on identifying and attaining your long term goals. Ultimately, college is a vehicle to opportunity. It is not your final destination, so it’s really important that you keep this big picture in mind and not just focus on the tactics of completing the check marks on your list of applying to colleges, getting done, your standardized test scores, making sure you get those a lot of recommendations. All of those hurdles are important to jump through as you go through the process. But that is not the most important part of this process. The most important part of the college process is figure out who you are and what you want. Ultimately, when you do that, you become a more attractive applicant to more colleges, and you’re more targeted in the colleges that you’re able to apply to. So I’m really excited to help you stop managing the impressions you make our admissions officers and start defying those impressions and to provide you with some essential guidance on cutting through the noise of the admissions process and gaining the confidence to forge your own path to success both in college and in life.
